Daily Bijoy News Special Correspondent:
Two people were killed and scores injured in a tripartite clash among protesters, the Awami League, and the police in Munshiganj headquarters on Sunday morning amid the ongoing 'all-out non-cooperation' movement. The identities of the deceased, aged around 30 and 35 respectively, have not yet been confirmed. Following the incident, a tense situation has prevailed in and around the district town.
According to UNB’s district correspondent, the protesters began gathering at the Muktijoddha Sculpture near the SuperMarket area around 10 am as part of their scheduled program. Shortly after, members of the ruling Awami League’s student body, Chhatra League, and youth wing, Jubo League, armed with weapons, chased the protesters and took control of the area.
Enraged, the protesters reorganized and retaliated, leading to chases and counter-chases in the area. At one stage, the police arrived and allegedly started firing rubber bullets, charging batons, and lobbing tear gas, resulting in several injuries.
The injured were rushed to Munshiganj Sadar Hospital, where physicians declared two of them dead. The correspondent reported that several crude bombs exploded during the clash. District Deputy Commissioner Md. Abu Jafar Ripon confirmed the deaths but stated that the police had been instructed not to fire.
