The Instrument of Accession to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED) has been officially deposited with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the designated depository for all multilateral treaties. Ambassador Muhammad A. Muhith, Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, handed over the instrument to David K. Nanopoulos, Chief of the Treaty Section, who accepted it on behalf of the Secretary-General on August 30.
As stipulated by the Convention, it will enter into force for Bangladesh on September 29, 2024, thirty days after the instrument of accession was deposited. During the handover ceremony, Ambassador Muhith emphasized that the interim government in Bangladesh, led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, is firmly committed to upholding human rights and fundamental freedoms for all citizens. "The Government’s commitment is clearly demonstrated by the fact that within 20 days of its installation, all internal procedures for accession to this important human rights treaty were completed," he stated. Nanopoulos congratulated Bangladesh on this historic milestone and praised the country’s dedication to the multilateral treaty framework.
He also announced that the United Nations would promptly issue the necessary notifications regarding Bangladesh’s accession to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. "The Instrument has been deposited on a very significant day, August 30, which is observed globally as the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances. Our action today expresses our solidarity with the countless victims of these heinous crimes and their families," added Ambassador Muhith during the handover. With this, Bangladesh has completed all procedures to become the 76th party to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance, according to the Bangladesh Mission in New York.
