A human chain was held in Naogaon to protest the terrorist attack on Now TV's bureau chief Hossain Ziyad and cameraman Parvez Rahman in the Sitalkunda, Jungle Salimpur area of Chattogram, where they had gone to collect news, and to demand the swift arrest of the accused. The hour-long program was observed on Thursday at 10:30 AM at the city's Muktir Mor, next to the Shaheed Minar, organized by media professionals working in Naogaon.
Presided over by Abdur Rahman Rizvi, editor of the weekly Projonmo's Alo, the human chain featured speeches by, among others: Mofazzal Hossain, President of the Citizens for Good Governance (Sujan), Naogaon district, and district correspondent of Bijoy TV; General Secretary and DBC district correspondent A.K. Saju; Sadekul Islam, district correspondent of Independent TV; Mahmudun Nabi Belal, correspondent of Sakaler Somoy; Ashraful Nayon, Vice-President of the District Journalists' Union and district correspondent of Bangla TV; General Secretary and district correspondent of Daily Bangla Sabuj Hossain; and Office Secretary Mahabul Alam Maruf.
District correspondent of Now TV, Abbas Ali, and others were also present. Journalists working in various media outlets in the district attended the human chain.
The speakers said that while collecting news, identified local terrorists attacked them with local weapons, vandalized their camera, and snatched other belongings. In protest of the incident, journalist organizations in various districts of the country are holding demonstration rallies, human chains, and other protest programs, demanding the arrest of the attackers. They stated that the police have not yet arrested the identified terrorists, raising questions about the passive role of the police administration. They demanded the immediate arrest of the terrorists involved in the attack and to bring them under the law.
Mofazzal Hossain, President of Sujan, Naogaon, and district correspondent of Bijoy TV, said, "Journalists are unable to collect information and wield their pens to protect public interests. When journalists take up their pens against corruption, they are harassed in various ways. Some are even losing their lives. Why is the government silent at this time?" He demanded a proper investigation and the swift bringing of the attackers under the law.
