In Dinajpur's Birganj, Pronoy Das's death was not suicide, but premeditated murder! PBI investigation uncovers the murder mystery.
Daily Bijoy News, Thakurgaon Correspondent:
What was initially claimed to be the suicide of Pronoy Das (25) in Birganj, Dinajpur, has been revealed as shocking information through the investigation by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI). It was not a suicide, but rather a premeditated murder stemming from an extramarital affair. Additional DIG Mahfuzzaman Ashraf confirmed the matter at a press briefing held at the Dinajpur PBI office on Wednesday (October 29, 2025) at 4:00 PM. He stated, "Although there was an initial attempt to pass off Pronoy Das's killing as a suicide, our investigation found evidence that it was a planned murder."
On October 20, 2025, the victim Pronoy Das's mother, Sharti Rani Das, filed a case (No. 34) under section 302/34 of the Penal Code at Birganj Police Station. The impoverished daily wage laborer had been alleging from the start that her son was murdered. After visiting the police station multiple times and not getting a proper investigation, she finally appealed to the PBI in Dinajpur.
The PBI investigation uncovered that on the day of the incident, Pronoy Das was killed by his father-in-law Nipendra Nath Roy, mother-in-law Jotsna Rani, wife Puja Rani Das, and brother-in-law Dipu Roy. After the murder, they tried to pass it off as a suicide. The mother-in-law initially went to the police station and filed an unnatural death case claiming he "committed suicide by consuming rat poison." However, the truth was uncovered through a covert investigation led by SI (Unarmed) Md. Mehedi Hasan of PBI Dinajpur. Evidence proved it was a meticulously staged murder.
Subsequently, on the night of October 20, all four accused were arrested from Dakeshwari village in Birganj Upazila. During interrogation with court permission, Dipu Roy and Puja Rani Das confessed to the murder. According to Dipu's testimony, Pronoy Das was killed due to family strife arising from Puja Rani's extramarital affair. Later, police seized the brick-making pharma (tool/mold) and cot used in the murder from Dipu's house.
The investigation was led by Additional DIG Md. Mahfuzzaman Ashraf of PBI Dinajpur. He said, "The PBI always works on conducting proper and impartial investigations into important cases. This case was an answer to a helpless mother's cries. We were able to uncover the true mystery within a short time. This will further increase public trust in the PBI."
Inspector Mostafiz, Sub-Inspector Mehedi Hasan, and several other police officers were present at the press briefing.
