Daily Bijoy News, Naogaon Correspondent:
A record acreage target for Boro rice and Rabi crop cultivation has been set for the current fiscal year in Mahadevpur upazila of Naogaon, known as the granary of the northern region, and other upazilas. Farmers are spending a busy time cultivating Rabi crops in these fields after completing the final care and harvesting of Aman rice. Alongside rice, the fertile agricultural land of the Barind region in the area is suitable for cultivating wheat, corn, potatoes, mustard, and winter vegetables. There are adequate stockpiles of fertilizer and arrangements for seed supply for the farmers to alleviate difficulties in cultivation. Upazila Agriculture Extension officers say that some unscrupulous individuals are spreading rumors about chemical fertilizers. They advise farmers not to pay heed to these rumors and to buy fertilizers only as and when needed. They state that there is no need to buy excess fertilizer.
There is no shortage of fertilizer in this upazila. When speaking with farmers from various areas, including farmer Jahurul Islam from Joypur Dangapara village, farmer Sharif Uddin from Heremnagar village, farmer Ukil from Gopalpur village, and farmer Abdul Jabbar from Shibrampur village, they said there is no fertilizer crisis. They are getting the required amount of fertilizer on time as per their need, and additionally, they have received incentive fertilizers and seeds.
According to information provided by Upazila Agriculture Extension Officer Md. Jahangir Alam, for the current 2025-26 fiscal year, a cultivation target has been set for the upazila's 10 unions: mustard on 4,450 hectares of land, potatoes on 2,070 hectares, wheat on 450 hectares, corn on 260 hectares, vegetables on 1,200 hectares, and Boro rice on 28,320 hectares of land.
In light of the target, to ensure uninterrupted chemical fertilizer supply, Mahadevpur upazila has adequate fertilizer stocks. For the current month of October, an allocation of 289 metric tons of Urea, 156 metric tons of TSP, 260 metric tons of DAP, and 212 metric tons of MOP is available. By the end of October, from this allocation, 178.6 metric tons of Urea, 85.5 metric tons of TSP, 167.75 metric tons of DAP, and 143.6 metric tons of MOP have been lifted. Currently, at the dealer level, there is a stock of 353.6 metric tons of Urea, 57.9 metric tons of TSP, 154.7 metric tons of DAP, and 300.5 metric tons of MOP. Sufficient fertilizer is allocated monthly for Rabi crop and Boro rice cultivation in the upazila. According to the Upazila Agriculture Office, for the upcoming November month, an allocation of 621 metric tons of Urea, 480 metric tons of TSP, 667 metric tons of DAP, and 423 metric tons of MOP is available.
For December, an allocation of 924 metric tons of Urea, 480 metric tons of TSP, 1080 metric tons of DAP, and 640 metric tons of MOP is available. Furthermore, this month, chemical fertilizers and seeds have been distributed free of cost among small and marginal farmers. In the current season, 6,540 farmers have received incentives for Rabi crop cultivation.
Upazila Agriculture Officer, Agriculturist Hossain Muhammad Ershad, informed that sufficient fertilizer is allocated monthly in this upazila for the current Rabi crop season. A group of unscrupulous individuals is spreading rumors about fertilizers. He requested farmers not to pay attention to rumors and to buy fertilizers only when needed. There is no need to buy fertilizer unnecessarily in advance. He requested farmers to buy fertilizer from the dealer level at the government-fixed price along with cash memos.
