President announces dissolution of Parliament to establish interim government

On Monday, President Mohammed Shahabuddin announced that the current Parliament will be dissolved as soon as possible in accordance with the Constitution. He delivered this message in a national address from Bangabhaban. Later that night, President Shahabuddin chaired a meeting at Bangabhaban with the chiefs of the three armed services, political leaders, civil society representatives, and leaders of the quota movement to discuss the formation of an interim government.
The meeting included a resolution of condolence for those who lost their lives in recent protests, with prayers for their souls' forgiveness and peace, according to a press release. It was also unanimously decided to release BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and all individuals detained during the recent movement. The participants agreed that communal harmony must be preserved.
Attendees included BNP leaders Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas; Jatiya Party members GM Quader, Mojibul Haque Chunnu, and Anisul Islam; Nagarik Oikya's Mahmudur Rahman Manna; Hefazat-e-Islam’s Mamunul Haque, Mufti Monir Kasemi, and Mahabubur Rahman; Jamaat-e-Islami’s Dr Shafiqur Rahman and Sheikh Md Masood; Zaker Party's Shamim Haider; Mass Solidarity Movement's Zonayed Saki; Dhaka University teacher Asif Nazrul; and Arif Talukder, Omar Faruq, and Mobashwera Karim Mimi from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
