Cantonments Not Housing Foreign Mission Personnel: ISPR
Daily Bijoy News Correspondent:
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has clarified that no personnel from foreign missions are currently residing in any of the country's cantonments. This was stated in a press release issued by ISPR on Saturday.
The statement explained that the recent political unrest and the ensuing law and order situation prompted requests for enhanced security from various foreign missions in Bangladesh.
When other law enforcement agencies were unavailable during this period, the army was called upon to assist in securing diplomatic areas and embassies in Dhaka, a responsibility that continues to this day.
In response to a request from the Indian High Commission, some civilian members were temporarily sheltered in Dhaka Cantonment and other military cantonments.
Additionally, some foreign personnel remained at their respective consulates or in hotels secured by the army. The statement also noted that a few Russian experts working at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant were provided with security.
The army has since shared all relevant information regarding these arrangements with the concerned ministry.
