Melania Trump Urges Putin to Protect Children in Rare Diplomatic Letter In a rare act of personal diplomacy, U.S. First Lady Melania Trump penned a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, appealing to his sense of humanity by urging him to consider the suffering of children affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine. The letter, written on official White House stationery, was hand-delivered by President Donald Trump during his meeting with Putin in Alaska on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.
Although the letter does not explicitly mention Ukraine, Melania Trump implores Putin to reflect on “an innocence which stands above geography, government, and ideology.” She writes that he has the power to “singlehandedly restore” the “melodic laughter” of children trapped in conflict zones.
“In protecting the innocence of these children, you will do more than serve Russia alone—you serve humanity itself,” the First Lady wrote. She added that “with the stroke of a pen,” Putin could profoundly change their lives. A copy of the letter was first obtained by Fox News and later circulated widely on social media, particularly by Trump supporters, including U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi.
The appeal comes amid ongoing international outrage over the reported abduction of Ukrainian children by Russian forces. Ukraine has accused Moscow of forcibly relocating tens of thousands of minors to Russia or Russian-occupied territories without parental consent—a practice Kyiv calls a war crime and a violation of the UN’s Genocide Convention.
Russia, however, maintains that it is evacuating vulnerable children from a war zone for their safety. According to the United Nations Human Rights Office, since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022, millions of Ukrainian children have endured significant suffering and systematic violations of their rights.
