Moynamati Union BNP's Biennial Council: Committee Announcement Deferred as Only 11?legates Attend!
Daily Bijoy News Comilla Correspondent:
The biennial conference of BNP was held yesterday, Thursday, across nine unions in Burichang Upazila of Comilla. While the process of forming the committee for Moynamati Union BNP was finalized in the presence of district and metropolitan leaders, the alarmingly low delegate attendance led to the postponement of the announcement. The chief guest concluded the main session, rescheduling it for May 11. This has sparked mixed reactions among local activists and supporters.
According to local BNP sources, the biennial conference for the nine unions under Burichang Upazila was scheduled for May 8 (Thursday). Following tradition, Moynamati Union BNP organized the event at Moynamati School ground at 4 PM. The chief guest was Zakaria Taher Sumon, former MP and convener of Comilla South District BNP, while the keynote speaker was Ashikur Rahman Mahmud Wasim, member secretary of South District BNP. The session was inaugurated by Utbatul Bari Abu, convener of Comilla Metropolitan BNP. Other district and upazila leaders were also present.
After the session, complications arose during the committee formation process via councillor voting. Leaders tallied the attendees and found only 40 out of 459 councillors present—just 11.475%. Forced to act, the leadership suspended the committee announcement and declared May 11 as the new date for the council. The chief guest instructed local leaders and delegates to ensure full attendance.
Multiple anonymous BNP and affiliate leaders revealed that councillors boycotted the conference upon learning that a vested group was pushing for a committee that excluded long-time supporters who endured sacrifices, attacks, cases, and persecution over 16 years.
