Severe Suffering Due to Dilapidated Road in Burichang, Comilla:

The 7-kilometer Koropai-Monghata-Abidpur road in Burichang Upazila, Comilla, has become nearly impassable due to numerous potholes and ditches covering a 3-kilometer stretch. Thousands of commuters, including farmers, face extreme difficulties transporting their produce to markets, while also being forced to pay extra fares daily. Additionally, rainwater accumulates on the road during rains, turning it into a large pond-like obstacle.

For the past eight years, no development or repair work has been done on this road, leaving it in a deplorable condition. Local residents report that the 3-kilometer stretch from Koropai Post Office to Kakiarchar and Monghata has become almost unusable. This severely affects not only the nearby villages of Lowerchar, Abidpur, Mithlam, Varella, Brahman Khara (Debidwar Upazila), Premu, and Chhotna but also thousands of daily commuters.

The road is crucial as it connects Junab Ali College, Tahera Junab Ali Girls' High School, Nimsar High School, various government and private schools, banks, insurance offices, courts, and markets in Abidpur. Hundreds of students, professionals, businesspeople, and laborers endure immense hardship while traveling on this road. Moreover, transporting patients, including pregnant women, to hospitals has become extremely challenging, with some even losing their lives due to delays.

Farmers from these agricultural villages face additional struggles, as they must transport their vegetables and other produce via tractors, CNG auto-rickshaws, and vans to Nimsar, one of the largest wholesale markets in the region. Due to the poor road conditions, transport drivers charge extra fares, further burdening the farmers.

CNG auto-rickshaw drivers like Jalil from Kakiarchar and Nasir from Mithlam village report frequent minor accidents due to the road’s condition. They demand immediate repairs. Some locals also blame unplanned construction along the road, which blocks drainage and causes waterlogging even after light rain.

Engineer’s Response:
Md. Alif Ahmed, Upazila Engineer, stated, "We are aware of the Koropai-Monghata-Abidpur road issue. We have sent an estimate for its repair. Once approved, we will start the work promptly."
