Due to adverse weather in Thakurgaon, farmers have suffered extensive damage.
Daily Bijoy News, Thakurgaon Correspondent:
Since last night, persistent drizzle and gusty winds have been sweeping across Thakurgaon district. This has left farmers in a predicament. Many farmers had cut the ripe paddy and left it in the fields, but due to the sudden rain, that paddy is now submerged in water. Consequently, they fear extensive damage. Additionally, the panicles of the paddy still in the fields are bending over due to the rain, raising concerns of reduced yield. Farmers say if this rain continues for several more days, all their hard work for the season will be wasted. Early potato cultivators are also in trouble. As water accumulates in the fields from the rain, potato seeds are being damaged in many places. As a result, farmers are facing severe losses.
Locals say that if the weather does not return to normal quickly, there is a fear of significant damage to the district's agricultural sector. Farmer Sohrab Hossain from Ranishankail upazila said, "I had planted early potato seeds, but water has accumulated in the field and everything is ruined now. It will cost a lot to buy seeds again and prepare the land." An official from the Thakurgaon Agriculture Extension Department informed, "The continuous rain has caused crop damage in almost all upazilas of the district. Work has begun to assess the extent of the damage at the field level."
On the other hand, the persistent rain has also caused difficulties in crop drying yards, farms, animal feed storage, and rural roads. Particularly, waterlogging in low-lying areas has created transportation problems. Locals fear that if this adverse weather continues for several more days, a major disaster could befall Thakurgaon's agricultural sector. According to the latest information from the Meteorological Department, rain may continue in the northern region of the country in the next 24 hours, and the sky will be partly cloudy.
