Husband killed by suffocation in Rajbari, wife and illicit lover get life imprisonment

The court has sentenced Rahim Khatun, the wife, and her illicit lover Sohail to life imprisonment with rigorous labor and a fine of 10,000 Taka each, along with an additional three months of simple imprisonment in case of non-payment, in the case of the murder of her husband, Shahid Mondol, in Pangsha, Rajbari. Judge Jaynal Abedin of the Rajbari District and Sessions Judge Court announced the verdict on Tuesday afternoon (October 7). Both convicted accused were absconding at the time the verdict was announced. Sohail is the son of Zia Uddin from Kaziyalpara village in Pangsha upazila, and Rahim is the wife of the deceased Shahid Mondol from the same village.

According to the case details, on the night of March 9, 2016, continuing into March 10 until 2 AM, Rahim Khatun and her illicit lover Sohail suffocated and killed Shahid Mondol, son of the late Jaynal Mondol from Kaziyalpara village in Pangsha upazila. Following the incident, the victim's brother, Shariful Islam, filed a case at the Rajbari No. 2 Amli Court, naming Sohail and four others as unknown accused. The case was recorded at Pangsha Model Police Station. The investigating officer arrested Rahim Khatun, who gave a confessional statement under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in court.

She stated that, lured by the promise of marriage from her illicit lover Sohail, she mixed sleeping pills with milk and fed it to her husband, Shahid Mondol. After he fell asleep, Sohail entered the room and, using a gamcha (thin towel), tied his nose and mouth and strangled him, suffocating him to death. She claimed she shouted for help ten minutes after Sohail left. She further stated that Sohail had promised to marry her. Later, after being released on bail in the case, Rahim Khatun went into hiding.

Advocate Abdur Razzak, the Public Prosecutor (PP) of Rajbari District and Sessions Court, said that in the sensational Shahid Mondol murder case, the illicit lover Sohail and the wife Rahim Khatun have been sentenced to life imprisonment with rigorous labor, a fine of 10,000 Taka each, and an additional three months of simple imprisonment in case of non-payment. However, both were absconding when the verdict was announced.
